Aussie – Dependable and Funky

Hello Mate!

Hello Mate!

I love the style of this Australian heirloom tomato. It’s a break from the perfectly shaped tomatoes that we typically harvest. It’s ribbed. Or, some describe it as fluted. Farmer J’s mom doesn’t like ribbed or fluted varieties, as she says that you lose too much tomato. I like the look, and how it feels. When we start selling tomatoes we’ll put out several of these beefsteaks. They are so unusual that I’m sure we’ll have a crowd gather around.

The only information I can find on the Aussie’s origin is that it’s from Australia. Gary Ibsen, who sells 600 varieties of Heirloom tomato seeds, loves the Aussie, and that’s good enough for me. We’ll be planting several of these next year.

This variety is disease resistant, is indeterminate, and is said to produce copious amounts of fruit. Out of all our plants, the Aussie has been virtually untouched by the disease that has hit the rest of Tomato Town.

We’ve only harvested 2 of these so far, and I can’t wait to try them. We haven’t wanted to cut into them because they look so cool!  The pictured tomato is close to 2lbs. Our plant is full of fruit, and they should be ready to harvest sometime this week.

That’s one I didn’t get to grow in my garden this year…looks like I’ll need to save one plant back for myself next year!

Beautiful! Very photogenic : ) Those Aussies are hardy folk. Not surprising that their produce would hold up against other’matos. Hope they taste as good as they look. Please let us know when you dig in!

We’ll bring a couple to the tomato party next week! Really looking forward to it. I can’t wait to grow several of these next year.
