The First Basket of Tomatoes
Our harvest total: 53
Violet Jasper is the most prolific so far, with Riesentraube in second place. Eight different varieties have stepped up to the plate, with another 50 or so on-deck. We’ve had considerable issues with blossom end rot and our forest at the back of our property has received dozens of ruined tomatoes. We say this nearly every year – what a strange growing season! The first few Violet Jaspers that ripened were mealy and not worth eating. Subsequent fruit have been wonderful. We expect a bumper crop this coming week. Stay tuned!
I’m glad the texture changed for you…I thought it might. Next week and the week after should be a flood of ripeness!
Yes, they are MUCH better than the first ones we picked. You have to eat Violet Jasper fast, however, since that variety tends tends to over ripen quickly!
