The Count

What kind of bird are you?

Two week’s harvest (July 2 – 16): 507 tomatoes and 320 cherry tomatoes

Total combined harvest to date:  893

This year, we break out the cherry tomato totals since they tend to skew the entire count.  Since it would take, on average, at least 20-30 cherry tomatoes to equal one beefsteak, it does not seem fair to count a cherry tomato as a whole tomato.

The deluge of ripe tomatoes led to serious sauce making. Last week, Farmer J canned 18 jars of tomato sauce. With tomatoes piling up on the dining room table, tomorrow looks to be another day of canning.

We’ve had several tomatoes tipping the scale at just over one pound each, including several Brandywines and Grandma Viney’s Yellow and Pink.

We’ll see how next week goes, as we’ve about cleared out our first set of tomatoes on the vines. High temperatures of have prevented many of our plants from setting new fruit, so August may be a bit lean. If you know how to do a rain dance, get out there and shake it!
