This is one of our favorite varieties, and one of the oldest that I’ve encountered. According to a couple of sources, Beam’s Yellow Pear dates back to the seventeenth century. I can understand how this variety has survived, as each plant produces hundreds of fruits. We planted this variety last year and had to take turns harvesting. They produced until the first frost, late into October of 2008. This variety is prone to self-seeding, which we can attest to, as our one plant produced many volunteers, including three dispatched to Lieutenant Jill up north, which sprouted this spring.

One web site claims that their Yellow Pear produced 1100 fruit. We are keeping track of ours. Keep an eye on The Count category of this site for updates.

These small, pear-shaped tomatoes are really great for snacking on while working in the garden.  Sweet tasting and packed with vitamins, eating 14 of these in one day will provide you with 35% of your daily Vitamin C requirements and 15% of your recommended Vitamin A dose. Farmer J planted this variety last year as she remembers her Grandpa growing these tomatoes and making preserves. With her papa, they dusted off the old family recipe and whipped up a batch of preserves that quickly became a staple in the morning served on toast.

If you want to try this variety, give us a shout next spring and we’ll save a few volunteers for you.
