Martino’s Roma – Now that’s Italian!

Another pear-shaped tomato, perfect for cooking, but good for eating fresh as well. This Italian heirloom tomato is recommended for canning, paste, and making sauces. It contains few seeds, and is very ‘meaty’. Farmer J finds them to be perfect for snacking. “They were my favorite tomato when I was a kid,” she told Farmer T in a recent interview.

What is a Roma? According to www.roma-tomato.com: “…all Roma tomatoes are paste tomatoes and most paste tomatoes can use the word Roma as an adjective in describing their shape, color and purpose.”

How did this variety get its name, Martino’s? Can’t say. The almighty internet won’t give up that secret. I can tell you it’s a determinate plant, which means it produces all at once, rather than throughout the season. This makes it easy for those who want to make tomato sauce or for those crazy folks that like to can.

We have two plants. Only one has produced so far. Twenty-five, as of Wednesday, July 22.
