This lovely variety resembles the ampleness that was Julia Child. Gary Ibsen, who sells organic heirloom tomato seeds, was friends with Julia, and wanted to honor her. In 2001, he asked her what type of tomato she wanted to lend her name to. She replied, “Tasty, my dear.” I love her!

Mr. Ibsen had some unnamed varieties of tomatoes that had been sent to him from various families in the states. He grew several, and picked out the best tasting one and thus the Julia Child heirloom tomato was born. If you are interested, his site is at: www.tomatofest.com. He sells over 600 certified organic heirloom tomato seeds. He knows his stuff!

This is a beefsteak tomato, which means it’s easy to slice, has virtually no core and is ideal for sandwiches.

So far, this one pound tomato has been the King, or rather Queen, of all we’ve harvested in Tomato Town. We are planning on enjoying it tonight for dinner, so we’ll update this post with a full report.
